1. Meeting

The 11th Meeting of CJK DOCP was held at Kyoto, Japan, in Oct. 21-22, 1997. Members from Taiwan, Japan, Germany, US and Russia attended to discuss about East Asia specific topics for actual applications of SC18/WG8 developed standards, in particular SGML, DSSSL, HyTime and Font Information Interchange.

Major discussion were carried out on
- Treatment of semi-graphical forms (table, list, equation, etc.) and inter-linear texts,
- CJK positions on XML and XSL,
- Japanese and Chinese representation of Fonts terminology,
- Character processing model,
- Treatment of Kanji variants and components,
- Style specification for Japanese documents and other East Asian documents.

The next CJK DOCP meeting will be held in the Russia or Beijing, in June 1998. The experts who are interested in East Asian document description/processing are expected to attend the meeting.

Resolutions of the 11th CJK DOCP Meeting

Resolution 1. General character processing model
CJK DOCP accepts CJK-DOCP/97-41 as the 1st version of a "CJK recommendation on general character processing model".

CJK DOCP instructs the project editor of general character processing model (Mr. Y. Okui) to draft the 2nd version, including the concept of working character sets and considering the suggestions of Dr. H. Lan and Dr. C. Wittern.
Resolution 2. BUCS
CJK DOCP accepts the proposed BUCS-1.1 as the 1st versions of a "CJK recommendation on basic unified character set".
Resolution 3. Processing of default entities in SGML documents
CJK DOCP accepts the CJK-DOCP/97-47 as the 1st versions of a "CJK recommendation on processing of default entities in SGML documents".
Resolution 4. Generic character structuring model
CJK DOCP instructs Dr. H. Lan to develop a generic character structuring model by using topological and mathematical approach to clarify the relationship between the existing character structuring models.
Resolution 5. Inter-linear texts
CJK DOCP instructs the project editors of inter-linear texts (Dr. C. Wittern and Prof. E. Matsuoka) to create a guideline for formatting of CJK inter-linear texts.
Resolution 6. CJK DOCP home page
CJK DOCP instructs Dr. Y. Komachi to submit the accepted CJK recommendations to the CJK DOCP home page for the review by CJK DOCP members and non-members.
Resolution 7. XML Liaison
CJK DOCP appoints Mr. Y. Okui as an informal liaison representative to W3C regarding, in particular, the issue of XML.
Resolution 8. 12th meetings
The 12th CJK DOCP meeting will possibly be held in China or Europe in April or May, 1998. Prof. C. C. Hsieh, Prof. L. Lancaster and Prof. E. Matsuoka are requested to arrange the meeting.
Resolution 9. Thanks for hosting the meeting
CJK DOCP thanks JBMA, hosting the meeting. Special thanks are due to Mr. Y. Okui and Dr. Y. Komachi for handling arrangements of the meeting.
Resolution 10. Confirmation
CJK DOCP confirms that the following resolutions of the 10th meeting are still valid:
Resolution 10.1 DTD for semi-graphical forms
CJK DOCP instructs Mr. R. Jelliffe to develop a new text of "CJK Recommendation on model/DTD for semi-graphical forms (table, list, equation, etc.)", making his document (CJK-DOCP/97-14) more generic.
Resolution 10.2 CJK multilingual linguistic markup
CJK DOCP instructs the editor (Mr. Jing-Shing Chang) to submit "CJK Recommendation on CJK multilingual linguistic markup" to the Chair. (Dr. Y Komachi) in an electronic form.
Resolution 10.3 Character/glyph treatment
CJK DOCP accepts the character/glyph treatments proposed by CJK-DOCP/97-27 (CJK-DOCP/96-11 and CJK-DOCP/96-12), and instructs Prof. C. C. Hsieh and Prof. Lehmen to edit them in the form of CJK Recommendation.
Resolution 10.4 Style of CJK multilingual documents
CJK DOCP instructs all the members to provide their requirements and examples for styles of CJK multilingual documents to Mr. Y. Okui, so that he may edit CJK DOCP/97-17 to be a "CJK Recommendation on the style of CJK multilingual documents".
Resolution 10.5 Extension to CJK document interchange
CJK DOCP acknowledges the need and importance of handling missing characters in electronic document exchange. Prof. Ju's specification for electronic form exchange and rendering, and Prof. Hsieh's mechanism for treating missing characters provides a foundation for further research and application in the multilingual area. CJK DOCP instructs CJK DOCP project leader, Prof. Ju, to include these efforts into the subproject - Multilingual DTD, and make a report in the next CJK DOCP meeting.
